When Sheffield became the tenth local authority to sign a contract for its BSF project to rebuild, refurbish and upgrade Secondary Schools throughout the city, the £400 million investment programme also needed to refurbish High Storrs School, a Grade II Listed Building which has Performing Arts School status.
To enable High Storrs School to be refurbished, high quality temporary portable building facilities were required to house the specialist Classrooms, such as 2 No. fully fitted out Food Technology Classrooms an associated Preparation room & Stores, a Dance Studio, Drama Rooms, Changing Facilities, Art Rooms, Staff Office and Relaxation Room.
Module-AR Limited were selected to become Sheffield LEP / Taylor Woodrows Key Supply Chain Partner to design and install the specialist portable Classroom buildings. The overall temporary building arrangement was specifically designed to enable both conversion into Science Laboratories at a later date and future expansion after the initial hire period of 52 weeks. The portable buildings were split into 2 No. individual blocks covering an overall footprint of 1,435m².
The temporary building includes a 118m² Dance Studio with Polyflor Sports 67 vinyl flooring, ballet barres, blackout blinds, stage lighting, sound system, mirrors to walls, hat & coat hooks, ceiling-hung tracks & curtains and a whiteboard. 3 No. large Drama Studios of varying sizes were also installed which included the same finishes as the Dance Studio. On the far side of the building are 2 No. large Food Technology rooms with fitted sinks, microwaves, cookers, fridges, DDA Compliant work station areas, ceiling-mounted extract fans, hat & coat hooks, apron hooks, worktops, storage cupboards and a dedicated Teachers’ Area with a whiteboard. Other rooms in the building are a Performing Arts Store room, Performing Arts Office, male & female Changing rooms, 2 No. Food Technology rooms, a Food Prep/Store room and WC’s.
Additional extras such as Heat & Cool air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, 2.7m high ceilings, 45dB rated acoustic partitioning to Dance and Drama Studios, maglocks to internal doors, standalone fire alarm & intruder alarm systems and a combination of Polysafe Standard vinyl & Primavera Xtra carpet tiled flooring were also included in this full Turnkey solution.
Externally the building was designed and manufactured to be long-lasting and maintenance free. Therefore GRP (Glass reinforced plastic) cladding, steel columns, Plastisol (plastic coated steel) fascia & canopy, steel doors and UPVC lockable windows with restrictors & wire mesh guards were fitted. A 100t crane was needed due to the size of the projects to lift the modules into position.
Just 4 days were required for Module-AR Limited to deliver and install the 43 No. modules with a total project completion time of 9 weeks. This was a huge advantage for the school due to the vast minimisation of site traffic and disturbance to the school & local area when compared with traditional on-site construction.
Words from the client
Mike Chapman, Headteacher at High Storrs School, commented: “We would like to thank the team at Module-AR for providing our school with excellent specialist teaching accommodation over the course of the summer. The quality of the portable building is of an exceptionally high standard and our students are already reaping the rewards of studying in these clean, bright temporary spaces. We would have no hesitation in using your services again.”
Alongside this reference from the school, Jeff Peace, Project Manager at Taylor Woodrows stated: “The level of commitment from all the collective team was magnificent, given the number of issues that were encountered prior to; and subsequent to commencing on site. Especially the spate of inclement weather that made conditions seriously challenging at times.”
