Hounsdown Dance Studio – Southampton

  • Client – Michael Weakley Architects
  • Project size – 150m²
  • Completion – 8 weeks
  • Modular Dance Studio
  • Enhanced 5kN/m² floor loading
  • 3m internal ceiling height
  • Sprung dance studio floor

Hounsdown School is home to over 1,200 pupils spanning ages 11 to 16. The School converted to a ‘new style’ academy on 1st August 2011 after its Governing Body agreed unanimously to convert to an academy in order to enable the school to continue to provide the best possible experiences, opportunities and staffing for students over the forthcoming years. The conversion to an academy gave Hounsdown greater freedom in how finances were allocated. As a result of this, the School’s need for a Dance Studio were met and Module-AR were awarded the contract to manufacture and install the building.

The structure consisted of 6 No. modules of 10m x 3m with a 15° pitched tiled roof. A superior than standard internal ceiling height of 3m (with recessed lighting) and an enhanced floor loading of 5kN/m² was requested so that the studio was as large, spacious and robust as possible. Full height mirrors, ballet barres and acoustic ceiling tiles were installed in order to improve the acoustic performance.

With a cladding combination of timber & Plastisol (plastic coated steel), an external door canopy and Venetian window blinds, the building looks modern and well-suited to a dance studio.

In total the project took just 8 weeks to manufacture, install & complete and is a great addition to the schools’ existing facilities.
